Description
North Country Climbing’s Belay Lesson is designed for climbers who want to build the skills needed to climb independently in the gym. This instruction-focused session prepares you to return on your own, manage a rope system, and belay a partner. It’s also a great option for parents who want to belay their children.
During the lesson, you’ll learn the fundamentals of top-rope climbing, including tying into the rope with a retraced figure-eight knot, belaying and lowering a climber, using standard climbing commands and responses, and performing standard partner checks. You’ll also get plenty of hands-on practice to build confidence with the system.
After completing the lesson, participants are welcome to continue climbing for the remainder of the day (until closing). On a future visit, climbers may take a belay test to gain approval to belay independently during future visits.
This lesson does not include a Day Pass or rental gear. A Day Pass must be purchased separately, and rental gear is available as an add-on. Click here for a day pass reservation, it can also be purchased on the day of your lesson.
If your goal is simply to climb during your visit, we recommend the Open Climb Package, which includes a Day Pass, rental gear, and staff belays (but does not include instruction).
Reservations can be made online up to 3 days in advance. For shorter notice, please call 603-838-5300 or contact us directly. Belay Lessons are not available during Member-Only Hours.
Once purchased, Belay Lessons are non-refundable except in extenuating circumstances as determined by staff. Please refer to our cancellation policy for full details.
Participants must be at least 14 years old to belay. All visitors must have a completed waiver on file.
