Frequently Asked Questions
What is Multi-Pitch Climbing?
Multi-pitch climbing takes place on taller cliffs where the length of a climb is longer than the rope, so the route must be broken down into multiple, shorter segments or “pitches. A route can have as many pitches as needed to reach the top, although in New Hampshire routes longer than 10 pitches (roughly 1000 ft) are uncommon.
Why Multi-Pitch Climbing?
Because traditionally protected multi-pitch climbing is the most technically demanding of the rock climbing disciplines, it epitomizes many of the skills that get neglected in the gym and competition environments. This makes it the perfect focus as we work towards our true goal: independence as outdoor rock climbers. Each year we will learn new skills and build on those learned in prior summers to help climbers develop competence and confidence in complex rock climbing terrain.
Where will climbers be staying?
Climbers will be staying in rustic cabins at Copper Cannon Camp in Bethlehem, NH. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at camp dining facilities, bagged lunches will be brought climbing each day. Bathrooms and outdoor showers are located on site.
Click here to see more details about where climbers will be staying.
What’s the curriculum?
Climbers will arrive Sunday afternoon, and climb Monday through Friday before packing up to go home. Climbers will begin the week practicing skills related to traditionally protected multi-pitch climbs. This includes cleaning gear, breaking down anchors, transitions, and various methods of descending. As the week progresses, climbers will use those skills on bigger objectives. Returning climbers will build on skills developed last year and begin progressing towards leading routes themselves, both multi-pitch and traditionally protected single pitch routes.
Multi-pitch Camp is for dedicated climbers who want to grow their craft. To ensure everyone gets the most out of camp, we reserve the right to send home climbers who do not meet the standard laid out on our application. Climbers who are sent home will not be refunded.
All North Country Climbing Camps fall under the Outdoor Guiding Cancellation Policy. It can be found here.
